NGC 6994 : an open cluster which is not an open cluster ⋆
نویسنده
چکیده
We report on CCD photometry in the Johnson B, V and I passbands for 146 stars in a 9 × 9 region around the southern aggregate NGC 6994 (C 2056128), which appears in the Lyng̊a (1987) catalogue of open star clusters. We argue that this object is not really an open cluster, but simply a random enhancement of four bright stars above the background level. This stars sample includes HD 358033 and GSC 05778–0082, together with M 73, which is referred to as a binary or multiple star, but actually represents the whole asterism. Since NGC 6994 is not the first case (see for instance Carraro & Patat 1995), this raises the possibility that other open clusters may have been misclassified. We also suggest that NGC 6994 is unlikely to be an open cluster remnant (OCR).

NGC 6994 - clearly not a physical stellar ensemble ⋆
The sparse stellar ensemble NGC 6994 = M73 has recently been discussed as a possible remnant of an old open cluster. In order to solve the controversy on the nature of this object we have taken high-resolution spectra of the six brightest stars within 6′ angular distance of its nominal position. These stars are the only obvious member candidates for an eventual cluster or cluster remnant since ...

We consider the possibility of cluster membership for 13 planetary nebulae that are located in close proximity to open clusters lying in their lines of sight. The short lifetimes and low sample size of intermediate-mass planetary nebulae with respect to nearby open clusters conspire to reduce the probability of observing a true association. Not surprisingly, line of sight coincidences almost ce...

متن کاملThe spatial distribution and luminosity function of the open cluster NGC 4815
NGC 4815 is a distant and populous open cluster, which lies in the galactic plane in a region of strong absorption. As a consequence, its membership, spatial distribution and luminosity function are not well determined. In this paper, we present an algorithm which uses both positional and photometric data simultaneously to search for open cluster members. The contribution of the field stars is ...
متن کاملNGC 6791 : an exotic open cluster or the nucleus of a tidally disrupted galaxy ?
We report on high resolution Echelle spectroscopy of 20 giant stars in the Galactic old open clusters NGC 6791 obtained with Hydra at the WIYN telescope. High precision radial velocity allow us to isolate 15 bona fide cluster members. From 10 of them we derive a global [M/H]=+0.39±0.05. We therefore confirm that NGC 6791 is extremely metal rich, exhibits a few marginally sub-solar abundance rat...
